 Qatar Celebrates International Literacy Day

The Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science organized several events to celebrate the International Literacy Day that corresponds to 8 September each year. The events were held in cooperation with Qatar National Library and a number of Qatari schools affiliated to UNESCO, during the period from 7 to 10 September 2019.

The activities included a seminar on "Literacy and Multilingualism" at Qatar National Library, inaugurated by Dr. Hamda Hassan Al-Sulaiti, the Secretary-General of the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. Dr. Al-Sulaiti hailed the level achieved by the State of Qatar in the field of literacy at the national level, by achieving the global target in the rate of engagement, while the illiteracy rate fell to 1.2%.

Dr. Hassan Ali Dibba presented a lecture entitled "Literacy and Multilingualism: Future Prospects", in which he addressed several axes, including the role of the UNESCO in this aspect and the challenges facing contemporary languages in the light of technological progress. Ms. Maha Al-Nuaimi from Qatar National Library also gave a detailed explanation of the implementation of the Mango Languages interactive database.

On Monday September 9, a workshop was organized at Al-Markhiya Primary School for Girls to train students on how to write a short story. The workshop was attended by Dr. Hamda Al-Sulaiti and Ms. Maryam Al-Yazidi in cooperation with Rosa Publishin House.

Another workshop was held on September 10 at Al-Bayan Preparatory School for Girls under the theme "Illiteracy and the Other" by novelist Rasha Sembel. The author reviewed the new concept of illiteracy and the role of UNESCO in this field and presented her works to the students as gifts.

At the end of these events, Dr. Hamda Hassan Al-Sulaiti, the Secretary-General of the Commission, expressed her gratitude to the principals of the schools for hosting these workshops and providing all facilities for their success.
